10 Films We're Excited For in 2020

Every year a handful of films come out that we’re very excited to see. In 2019, it was movies like Us, Avengers: Endgame, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, and Star Wars to name a few. Today, we’re giving you 10 films that we’re super excited to see this year in 2020.

Pixar’s Onward - March 6, 2020

Pixar's Onward.gif

Pixar’s back with yet more beautifully designed characters and an all new world where mythical creatures have developed a society that doesn’t look all that different from our own. Set in a suburban fantasy world, two brothers set out on a quest to determine if magic is still real. You might be saying, “What? An animated film? That’s for kids.” All we have to say is that this is the studio that brought you Monsters Inc., Inside Out, both Incredibles films, and a boat load of incredible Disney collaborations on films like Toy Story. All of those films are incredible movies that pertain to both kids and adults. Regardless of if a movie is animated, live action, anime, stop motion or otherwise, it’s important for us to appreciate and respect the art form. Pixar has pushed the boundaries and moved this genre forward and we’ve really loved the story’s they’ve told us in recent years. We’re excited to see this next story and adventure they take us on, this time with Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as two teenage elves.

Quiet Place 2 - March 20, 2020 (Delayed by COVID-19)

Jim Halp- sorry, John Krasinski’s follow up to his hit film, A Quiet Place, starring his wife, Emily Blunt and two wonderfully gifted young actors, Noah Jupe, and the Millicent Simmonds, who stole the show, is releasing very soon and we could not be more pumped. The first film was full of suspense and had us on edge the entire time. Hoping Krasisnki can replicate that in a new and fresh way while expanding his apocalyptic world for the sequel, this time with Cillian Murphy in the mix who is an exciting addition to this series. To be honest, we are a little nervous it won’t live up to the first film, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t excited for it. Fingers crossed it’ll be just as good, if not better.

No Time To Die - April 10, 2020 (Delayed by COVID-19)

No Time To Die 1.gif

We are big fans of Daniel Craig’s Bond. Now to be clear, we didn’t say we are fans of all the movies (Quantum of Solace was rough), but Casino Royale and Skyfall are incredible. Just when we thought Craig was dropping out of the franchise, he comes back for one last round. No Time To Die is hopefully going to wrap up his time as 007, with some members of the previous films like Ralph Fiennes, Léa Seydoux, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright and Ben Wishaw (Q). But who we are really excited for is Ana de Armas’ performance and a new villain played by Rami Malek. With a new director heading the project (Cary Joji Fukunaga), we are excited for a new vision and perspective being brought to this decades long franchise.

Black Widow - April 24, 2020

Black Widow 1.gif

Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz? Sign. Us. Up! This film takes place in between the events of Civil War and Infinity War as Natasha returns to Russia and based on the trailer, confronts her past. We’re expecting a good deal of action and maybe even a seed planted to see Florence Pugh continue as the new Black Widow in the next phase of Marvel films? Just a thought. Seems like David Harbour can’t escape Russia whether it’s Black Widow or Stranger Things 3. Well, we’re really just hoping for a fun, exciting adventure that really connects to our main storyline. Scarlett Johansson also deserves her own film and we love that this isn’t going to be a cliche origin film. She’s an incredibly talented actress who had an insane 2019 performing in Avengers: Endgame, Marriage Story, and Jojo Rabbit. Very excited to see her return to this role and meet the new characters of Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, and Melina Vostokoff.

F9 - May 22, 2020 (Delayed by COVID-19)

Sweet Jesus. What to say about this? We’re not excited for it’s masterful storytelling, or it’s masterfully crafted nature, or the production design, or really anything that makes a movie good. No. We’re excited for it because of it’s sheer insanity. Do you see the gif we posted? That’s a man surfing a sideways BMW down a busy interstate and catching a flipping car with his hands. Only Vin Deisel or maybe John Cena would do this… There is so much insanity in these movies that we just can’t wait to laugh through all of it. It’s going to be outrageous. You know what these films are missing though? The only thing that could possibly make these movies even more ridiculous? A Nicolas Cage performance. Who’s starting that petition? We need Nick Cage as the villain for F10. Also don’t even get us started on Justice For Han. If he’s not dead, he doesn’t need justice. Nuff’ said.

The Green Knight - May 29, 2020

The Green Knight.gif

Get ready for another humdinger from A24. We know little about this film other than what we can disect from the obscure and very artsy trailer. What we can speculate based on the original 14th Century Arthurian poem is this: The Green Knight once put forth a challenge that if any knight who strikes him and agrees to receive a return blow in a year and a day, that his axe would be theirs. Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) wants the honor and so agrees, but after beheading The Green Knight, he grabs his head off the floor and reminds Gawain to meet him in the Green Chapel in a year and a day. And so he does. This is all speculation of course based on the traditional story and what we’ve seen in the trailer. Likely, the majority of this film is going to be about Gawain’s journey to meeting The Green Knight at the chapel and the obstacles he’ll face along the way while dealing with his honor, and fear. We’re getting some real Midsommar vibes from the trailer. A24 seems to be telling stories that are folklore like The Green Knight, or could be folklore such as Midsommar. This studio is one of our absolute favorites as it allows directors to maintain their creative vision producing personal, emotional pieces of artistic cinema that capture your attention. We’re talking films like Ex Machina, The Farewell, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, The Last Black Man in San Fransisco, Uncut Gems, and more. It’s because of all of this that we’re incredibly excited for The Green Knight.

Tenet - July 17, 2020

Tenet 1.gif

Everyone’s favorite psychological, time warping director is back with yet another psychological, time warping film. Chris Nolan follows up his latest film Dunkirk with another time bender, this time starring Robert Pattinson and John David Washington (This is Denzel’s son, ya’ll) in his new film, Tenet (a palindrome which we’re sure will mean something in the film). Get ready for things to get crazy, time to mess with your head, and for some big action and exciting set pieces. Why are we excited for this film? For one, we often say in the podcast that we love when studios give their directors full control and Chris Nolan is one of those directors who always creates his vision whether it’s good or bad. His films are unique, high concept, and make for an unbelievable experience in the theater. If you’re planning to see this film, don’t wait for it to hit blu-ray. Get to the theater and see it on the largest screen possible. We just hope that Nolan doesn’t push the time bending thing too far because it might become a little gimmicky if done incorrectly. Guess we’ll see later this year. Second reason is because we really love the work Pattinson is putting out as of recent and John David Washington is just so enjoyable to watch whether as Ricky Jerret in HBO’s Ballers or in Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman. Looking forward to their performances in Tenet later this year.

The French Dispatch - July 24, 2020

The French Dispatch 1.gif

He’s back. The quirky, charming, symmetry loving, OCD, pastel obsessed director we all know and love has returned for what looks like his most beautiful film to date. The amount of visual stimulation from the trailer alone is unbelievable. On top of that, have you seen the cast list? It has the regulars you’d expect from Anderson like Bill Murray, Tilda Swindon, Willem Dafoe, Adrian Brody and Owen Wilson, but also some newcomers like Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Benicio Del Toro, and Elisabeth Moss. That’s not even everyone… but, I mean, it has us excited for the film. And obviously we know that a big cast list doesn’t make a film a good film (we’re looking at you Valentine’s Day & Movie 43), but In #WesWeTrust, so needless to say, we are ready for another symmetrical, quirky adventure.

The King’s Man - September 18, 2020

The King's man 1.gif

Josiah saw the first Kingsman in theaters 3 times. When asked why he just says, “It was insanely fun.” Can’t argue with him in that respect. The sequel to that first Kingsman might not have been as good, but it did expand the universe of the privately funded secret society of spies and world savers. The King’s Man looks to expand this even further taking us back decades to the 1910s during WWI. All we know is that it’s up to a few good men/women to save the world again and we’re totally down with that. Now, we do have some worries over the fact that this film was originally supposed to release in November 2019, then February 2020 and now it’s pushed to a September 2020 release. Not sure if this means there were extensive reshoots, or edits, or if the studio was just hoping to maximize it’s release date to make the most money. We’ll know once we catch the film, but looks like we’ll have to wait a few more months. Regardless, we’re very excited for another action packed, fun, tale of espionage in an era that lacks a lot of technology which should make for a unique ride.

Last Night in Soho - September 25, 2020

Last Night in Soho.png

And last but not least is Last Night in Soho directed by one of Josiah’s all time favorite directors, Edgar Wright. If you don’t know who Edgar Wright is, this is the guy who directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgram vs. The World, and Baby Driver. We’re looking at another director who doesn’t compromise on his vision for his films and while we haven’t even seen a trailer from Last Night in Soho, we’re still excited about it. What is this movie about you ask? Well here’s what IMDb has to say

“A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.”

We can still expect a bit of Wright’s humor, signature camera movements and editing, and certainly his music choices, but it seems that this may be another drama/thriller of his that isn’t wrapped in a comedic lining like Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, instead lending it’s voice probably closer to that of Baby Driver. Regardless of what direction he is taking this film, we’re excited to see him return and for the performances from Anya Taylor Joy (The Witch, Split, The New Mutants) and Thomasin Mackenzie (Jojo Rabbit)

Well what do you think? Agree with our list? What movies are you excited for in 2020? Let us know in the comments below. We are in the process of creating a whole 2nd list of 10 more films we’re excited for in 2020 because it looks like it could be another good year for movies.
